The Makerere University Christian Union (MCU), one of Uganda's oldest and most influential Christian student organisations, marked its 70th anniversary on 28 January 2026 with a thanksgiving service attended by alumni, current students, and university administration at the Makerere University Main Hall.

Founded in 1956 as part of the Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship movement, the MCU has produced some of Uganda's most prominent pastors, bishops, theologians, and Christian public servants. Its alumni network spans over 10,000 graduates who credit their time at the Christian Union with shaping their faith and vocational vision.

The anniversary service was addressed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, who praised the MCU's role in shaping the moral character of Makerere graduates. Several alumni testified to the lasting impact of their CU involvement, including three bishops, a cabinet minister, and the CEO of one of Uganda's largest NGOs.

The MCU announced a 70th anniversary scholarship fund to support theologically-gifted students who cannot afford tuition, with a target of supporting 70 students by the end of 2026. Donations can be made through the MCU's official website.
